Ecuador is making significant strides in the renewable energy sector, leveraging its natural resources to support sustainable economic growth and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
As of 2021, the country generated a substantial 79% of its electricity from hydropower, owing to its mountainous terrain and numerous rivers which create ideal conditions for hydroelectric plants. However, this heavy reliance on hydropower means the country must diversify its energy mix to enhance stability and sustainability.
One of Ecuador's notable advantages is its equatorial location, which guarantees approximately 12 hours of sunlight daily throughout the year. This abundant solar resource positions Ecuador as a prime candidate for solar energy expansion. The country has recognised this potential, with efforts underway to increase its installed solar capacity. By 2021, the installed capacity of solar power had reached over 28 MW, and projections suggest significant growth by 2024.
Wind energy, while still a minor player in Ecuador’s energy portfolio, is beginning to gain traction. In 2021, wind power contributed just 0.2% to the nation’s electricity generation. The primary wind resources are located in the provinces of Loja and Azuay, where conditions are favourable for wind energy development.
Ecuador's government is actively identifying optimal locations for large-scale solar and wind projects, aligning with global trends to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix. These initiatives are crucial as the country looks to diversify its energy sources. Ecuador's commitment to expanding its renewable energy capabilities is a promising step towards a sustainable future, balancing hydropower with significant investments in solar and wind energy.
